Birmingham Restaurant Review

Zizzi - Reviewed on 06/12/06

The Mailbox, Birmingham, B1 1XL. 0121 632 1335.

Zizzi's is nicely situated looking over the canal at the Mailbox. In the summer the outside seating always looks very tempting. Inside the restaurant the dark wood furniture and low lighting make a very welcoming dinning area. However, for some reason the restaurant does not allow you to book unless you have a party of 8 or more.

To start we decided to share one Garlic Mozzarella Pizza Bread with Caramelised Balsamic Onions, £3.95. Although the flavour was fantastic, I was slightly disappointed by there only being about 6 small pieces of onion. The waiter also wandered around the restaurant with our drinks asking who had ordered them before getting them to us. The waiter had also neglected to remove our used plate before bringing our main course, leaving him with no room to put anything.

That said, the food did help to stop the visit slipping into a night of small niggles. I ordered the Strozzapretti Pesto Rosso £7.75 whilst my partner had a classic Lasagna Bologna £7.96. The Strozzapretti was well cooked and certainly was filling as I left a fare amount. The pasta was not overdone which left a good element of chewyness to it. My partner however commented that the Lasagna was nothing special. I must admit the presentation of it was no different to that you would find in any pub throughout the country. We both had a large glass of Merlot, which at £4.75 seemed a little expensive in here considering the pricing of the food.

All in all, Zizzi is not a bad place to go for dinner. The food here is pretty decent, whilst not amazing, but the pricing is pretty competitive which makes it a good place to go if you want a quick and simple meal.

Our Opinion - 3 out of 5

I loved Zizzi's and always used to get the Strozzapretti Pesto Rossa but they have changed the menu now and longer have it, also the staff in the maidstone branch are so rude and unhelpful!!!
