Theatres in Birmingham

Birmingham Hippodrome

Not quite London's West End, however, Birmingham has a good number of fantastic theatre's for those with a thespian bent. From former West End musicals, to amateur dramatics, it can all be found in Birmingham.

The Birmingham Hippodrome

Birmingham Hippodrome - Hurst Street +44 (0)870 730 1234

The Birmingham Hippodrome is arguably Birmingham's main theatre. It has staged many world class professional productions, with the recent performance of Starlight Express being a prime example of how the theatre can take a West End musical and keep the audiences filling the seats. The Birmingham Hippodrome has not long undergone a massive refurbishment, so an even better reason to go to and see a show.

The Birmingham Repertory

The Birmingham Repertory (The Rep) - Broad Street +44 (0)121 236 4455

The Birmingham Rep is located in the Convention Quarter next to Broad Street. You wont find many sing-a-longs on stage here, but there are plenty of comedy's and plays.

The Alexandra Theatre

The Alexander Theatre - Station Street +44 (0)870 607 7533

On first impression of this Birmingham theatre, you may think that it's the smallest theatre in the world. What you wouldn't know is that from the main entrance and bar, you cross a bridge over a small street to get to the auditorium. All good fun. Although no where near as much fun as the acts you'll see on stage.

The Crescent Theatre

The Crescent Theatre - Sheepcote Street +44 (0)121 643 5858

This is small 'local' theatre for small local people. Well okay, you don't have to be that small. The Crescent Theatre shows plenty of performances from one of Birmingham oldest theatre groups, although that doesn't mean that you'll never spot the odd famous face. The Ron Barber Studio is very intimate so you'll love it if you actually like sitting on the stage itself.

The Drum Theatre - +44 (0)121 333 2444

Located in Aston this is a far more cultural alternative to watching The Villa. Although there is probably just as much acting. The Drum Theatre promotes Asian, African and Caribbean arts culture.

The Midlands Art Centre (Mac) - +44 (0)121 440 3838

This is an 'Arts Centre' in the middle of Canon Hill Park. You'll find decent comedy and drama aplenty here.
